Texas native Jeremiah Houston knows his audience, and they love him. Topping the Texas Music Charts on multiple occasions and winning record of the year from the Academy of Texas Music Awards proves that he has a large support system in his home state. And now that he's working on album #5, he's poised to break through to the top and grab the nation's attention in a big way. It's important that you know one thing, though. Jeremiah and his soulmate/black lab, June Carter, come as a package deal (she even has her own T-shirt.) She's a cutie, too. I've seen the pictures.
Without further ado, please sit back, listen to the Jeremiah Houston Band, and read more about this talented musician!
What is your name?
Describe your music style to our readers.
My music style was best defined from our publicist "the style that makes you feel like you met Waylon Jennings at a Bruce Springsteen concert!" Nicole Cochran
Tell us about your journey to becoming a musician.
At age four I began playing the piano that my mama & papa John Houston Pillow had given me without knowing how to read music or any notes on the keys. I was writing and playing the guitar and drums by age 12 to the sounds of Journey, Metallica, Foreigner, and Johnny Cash. By the time I was in High School I had formed a garage band called the "Broken Arrow." We played one live show before I joined the U.S. Marine Corps. During my stay in the Marines my writing got more depth and I was able to articulate better as a writer. After my tour of Duty I came back to Texas where I grew up in the small town of Seagraves and sent in a few demos to an undisclosed record label, to whit turned out to be a big scam out of Nashville, TN. After recovering from this fall I gathered my bearings and decided to move to Austin, TX and start another band independently. From 2007 to 2013 we have had four songs charted on the Texas Music Chart in the top 40 and won record of the year in 2011 from the Academy of Texas Music Awards. We are currently working on record number 5!
If you could play a show with one musician, who would it be and why?
I believe If I could play with any artist at the moment it would be Johnny Cash. Though it's not actually possible, but his voice cuts through to the audience like nothing I've ever heard. His songs reach out and grab you and then punch you in the face and you wonder what just happened. However, the most important thing is he lived his songs, 99.9% of his songs were not pitched to him. I have written a song about Johnny Cash called "Look In His Eye" which I believe tells Johnny's story very well.
What do you like most about a live performance?
The best thing about performing live for me is to feel the crowd loving your songs and singing along with you. The power you get from your audience is indescribable.
I read that you were the 2011 Academy Of Texas Country Music "Record Of The Year" award winner. How has that moment changed your career?
That moment was actually a very big game changer for us. We were exposed to a bigger audience and the people within our circle now are very supportive of the Texas Music scene and we all help each other and get along very well…for the most part!! The award also helped us score a booking agent with a busier tour schedule.
