Hamilton Loomis

Musician/Singer/Songwriter Hamilton Loomis began his professional musical journey when most boys were dreaming about girls and baseball. And with the influence of some industry heavy hitters (like Bo Diddly!), he successfully navigated his career into adulthood. Now, Hamilton has turned the tables and feels the call to assist other young musicians. Read more about this below.

Put his music on repeat, turn up the volume, and let the infectious, captivating and energizing stylings of Hamilton Loomis get your body moving and your soul grooving.

What is your name?

Hamilton Loomis, people call me Ham or Ham-Bone

Describe your music style to our readers.

It's kind of a mixture of everything I listened to growing up: soul, blues, funk, rock, pop. It's hard to describe, but I like to call it "Texas Soul Music".

What is your musical background?

I have a musical family. I started playing instruments really young, and played professionally at 14 with my family doo-wop group, then started writing songs at around 18. I got to meet Bo Diddley when I was 16 and we became friends. He's the one who really encouraged me to be original. He said, "you gotta sound like you, not like me...innovate, don't imitate".

Tell us about your "pay it forward" philosophy and how this came to be.

There were several generous musicians/role models who showed me the ropes when I was growing up in the Texas music scene, like Bo, and especially Houston's Joe "Guitar" Hughes. They were mentors to me...they took the time so share what they knew with me, and I learned so much from them. Now that I notice a resurgence of young musicians coming up now, I feel compelled to do the same and share that knowledge with the youngsters today. It's not just an obligation, It's my duty.

I've read that your performance is "energetic" and infectious". What are you feeling when performing for a crowd?

I just feel joy when I play and perform, and I hope some of that transcends to the audience. When I play, music literally moves me, so it's great to feel that energy with the crowd.

If you could pick one musician (alive or dead) to perform with, who would it be and why?

Hmm...there are so many. I think it would be Stevie Wonder...I learn so much from that guy every time I hear him. And what a songwriter....!

What are 3 things most people don't know about you?

1. I sing the song "Bow Wow" but I'm also a cat person. 2. I'm really a bass player. 3. Even though I'm a Texan, born and raised, I'm completely ignorant about football.

What are your goals for the upcoming year?

I'd love to break into new markets where I've never performed, like Russia or China!! We've got some cool tours planned for next year, so stay tuned!
